The air feels different, kinda cool and crisp, like it’s been washed clean overnight. When I hopped down to the stream this morning, a soft fog floated above the water, and the ground made a crunch beneath my feet. It seems the whole world is preparing for Winter.
I saw a spiderweb stretched between two cattails, glistening with tiny drops of dew. It sparkled like a necklace made just for the morning sun. Bartholomew said she is an Argiope aurantia, a black and yellow garden spider. She was sitting proudly in the middle, waiting ever so patiently. I whispered a hello, trying not to shake her big, beautiful orb web.
All around, the woods were busy in a quiet sort of way. A chipmunk stuffed his cheeks full of acorns until he looked ready to pop! A squirrel raced up a tree with a nut in her mouth, and a family of ducks were poking around the muddy bank, probably looking for a last snack before the cold comes.
Everything seems to know it’s time to get ready for winter. The leaves are even letting go, one by one, dancing down to join the stream.
I think I’ll stay here a while and watch the world slow down.
